Algarve Grape Varieties — The Vines Behind the Region’s Wines
A Region Built for Vines
With over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and natural protection from the Serra Algarvia against cold northern winds, the Algarve offers ideal growing conditions for a wide range of varieties. Production is organized under four Designations of Origin — Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, and Tavira — as well as the broader Algarve Geographical Indication.
Red Grape Varieties
Negra Mole
The emblematic native variety of the Algarve. It produces elegant, complex wines and is the true symbol of the region’s winemaking identity.
Castelão and Trincadeira
Two of the most widely used varieties in red wine production, often blended to create the classic structured reds the Algarve is known for.
Touriga Nacional
One of Portugal’s most celebrated varieties, it has adapted well to the Algarve’s microclimate and adds depth and aromatic complexity to the region’s top wines.
International Varieties
Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot have all found a comfortable home in the Algarve’s sandy and limestone soils, producing well-balanced, expressive wines. Other authorised varieties include Alicante Bouschet, Alfrocheiro, Aragonez (Tinta Roriz), Baga, Petit Verdot, and Pinot Noir.
White Grape Varieties
Crato Branco (Síria / Roupeiro)
The principal traditional white variety of the Algarve, known in other regions as Roupeiro. It forms the backbone of many of the region’s white wines.
Arinto and Moscatel
Arinto brings freshness and acidity; Moscatel (Moscatel-Graúdo) is one of the oldest and most valued varieties, used in both white and sweet fortified wines. Manteúdo is another traditional white of local significance.
Emerging Whites
In response to changing market preferences, varieties such as Alvarinho, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier have been increasingly planted in recent years.
Sun, Soil, and Character
Together, these varieties produce whites that are fresh and mineral, and reds that range from light and fruity to full-bodied and structured — wines that carry the warmth of the southern sun in every glass.
