The Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the most important protected wetlands in Portugal, designated as a “Ramsar” site and one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal.
This Nature Reserve belongs to the Natura 2000 network and covers an area of 14,000 hectares protected by a complex web of sandbars and dunes, stretching for 60 km along the coast and regularly hosting more than 20,000 water birds, especially during the winter.
This is a crucial point for migratory birds from Northern Europe to Africa. More than 220 bird species can be seen in a single day in a variety of habitats, such as dunes, open water, salt marshes, salt marshes, reed beds, lagoons and pine forests.
We travel through dune, lagoon and salt marsh areas. We can observe resident and migratory birds. The Grey Heron, Spoonbill, White Stork, Grebe and Sandpiper are just a few examples.
